The triliteral root ʿayn ṭā wāw (ع ط و) occurs 14 times in the Quran, in three derived forms:

  • once as the form I verb taʿāṭā (تَعَاطَىٰ)
  • eight times as the form IV verb aʿṭā (أَعْطَىٰ)
  • five times as the noun ʿaṭā (عَطَآء)

Verb (form I) - to take

(54:29:3) fataʿāṭāand he took فَنَادَوْا صَاحِبَهُمْ فَتَعَاطَىٰ فَعَقَرَ

Verb (form IV) - to give

(9:29:24) yuʿ'ṭūthey pay حَتَّىٰ يُعْطُوا الْجِزْيَةَ عَنْ يَدٍ وَهُمْ صَاغِرُونَ
(9:58:7) uʿ'ṭūthey are given وَمِنْهُمْ مَنْ يَلْمِزُكَ فِي الصَّدَقَاتِ فَإِنْ أُعْطُوا مِنْهَا رَضُوا
(9:58:12) yuʿ'ṭawthey are given وَإِنْ لَمْ يُعْطَوْا مِنْهَا إِذَا هُمْ يَسْخَطُونَ
(20:50:4) aʿṭāgave قَالَ رَبُّنَا الَّذِي أَعْطَىٰ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ خَلْقَهُ ثُمَّ هَدَىٰ
(53:34:1) wa-aʿṭāAnd gave وَأَعْطَىٰ قَلِيلًا وَأَكْدَىٰ
(92:5:3) aʿṭāgives فَأَمَّا مَنْ أَعْطَىٰ وَاتَّقَىٰ
(93:5:2) yuʿ'ṭīkawill give you وَلَسَوْفَ يُعْطِيكَ رَبُّكَ فَتَرْضَىٰ
(108:1:2) aʿṭaynākaWe have given you إِنَّا أَعْطَيْنَاكَ الْكَوْثَرَ

Noun

(11:108:16) ʿaṭāana bestowal عَطَاءً غَيْرَ مَجْذُوذٍ
(17:20:6) ʿaṭāi(the) gift كُلًّا نُمِدُّ هَٰؤُلَاءِ وَهَٰؤُلَاءِ مِنْ عَطَاءِ رَبِّكَ
(17:20:10) ʿaṭāu(the) gift وَمَا كَانَ عَطَاءُ رَبِّكَ مَحْظُورًا
(38:39:2) ʿaṭāunā(is) Our gift هَٰذَا عَطَاؤُنَا فَامْنُنْ أَوْ أَمْسِكْ بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ
(78:36:4) ʿaṭāana gift جَزَاءً مِنْ رَبِّكَ عَطَاءً حِسَابًا
