The triliteral root zāy nūn yā (ز ن ي) occurs nine times in the Quran, in four derived forms:

  • twice as the form I verb yaznu (يَزْنُ)
  • once as the verbal noun zinā (زِّنَىٰٓ)
  • three times as the active participle zān (زَان)
  • three times as the active participle zāniyat (زَانِيَة)

Verb (form I) - to commit adultery

(25:68:17) yaznūnacommit unlawful sexual intercourse وَلَا يَقْتُلُونَ النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَلَا يَزْنُونَ
(60:12:16) yaznīnathey will commit adultery يُبَايِعْنَكَ عَلَىٰ أَنْ لَا يُشْرِكْنَ بِاللَّهِ شَيْئًا وَلَا يَسْرِقْنَ وَلَا يَزْنِينَ

(17:32:3) l-zināadultery وَلَا تَقْرَبُوا الزِّنَا إِنَّهُ كَانَ فَاحِشَةً وَسَاءَ سَبِيلًا

Active participle

(24:2:2) wal-zānīand the fornicator الزَّانِيَةُ وَالزَّانِي فَاجْلِدُوا كُلَّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمَا مِائَةَ جَلْدَةٍ
(24:3:1) al-zānīThe fornicator الزَّانِي لَا يَنْكِحُ إِلَّا زَانِيَةً أَوْ مُشْرِكَةً
