The triliteral root khā tā mīm (خ ت م) occurs eight times in the Quran, in four derived forms:

  • five times as the form I verb khatama (خَتَمَ)
  • once as the noun khātam (خَاتَم)
  • once as the noun khitām (خِتَٰم)
  • once as the passive participle makhtūm (مَّخْتُوم)

Verb (form I) - to seal

(2:7:1) khatamaHas set a seal خَتَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ وَعَلَىٰ سَمْعِهِمْ وَعَلَىٰ أَبْصَارِهِمْ غِشَاوَةٌ
(6:46:8) wakhatamaand sealed قُلْ أَرَأَيْتُمْ إِنْ أَخَذَ اللَّهُ سَمْعَكُمْ وَأَبْصَارَكُمْ وَخَتَمَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِكُمْ مَنْ إِلَٰهٌ غَيْرُ اللَّهِ يَأْتِيكُمْ بِهِ
(36:65:2) nakhtimuWe will seal الْيَوْمَ نَخْتِمُ عَلَىٰ أَفْوَاهِهِمْ وَتُكَلِّمُنَا أَيْدِيهِمْ
(42:24:10) yakhtimHe would seal أَمْ يَقُولُونَ افْتَرَىٰ عَلَى اللَّهِ كَذِبًا فَإِنْ يَشَإِ اللَّهُ يَخْتِمْ عَلَىٰ قَلْبِكَ
(45:23:10) wakhatamaand He sets a seal أَفَرَأَيْتَ مَنِ اتَّخَذَ إِلَٰهَهُ هَوَاهُ وَأَضَلَّهُ اللَّهُ عَلَىٰ عِلْمٍ وَخَتَمَ عَلَىٰ سَمْعِهِ وَقَلْبِهِ

Noun

(33:40:11) wakhātamaand Seal مَا كَانَ مُحَمَّدٌ أَبَا أَحَدٍ مِنْ رِجَالِكُمْ وَلَٰكِنْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَخَاتَمَ النَّبِيِّينَ

Noun

(83:26:1) khitāmuhuIts seal خِتَامُهُ مِسْكٌ وَفِي ذَٰلِكَ فَلْيَتَنَافَسِ الْمُتَنَافِسُونَ

Passive participle

(83:25:4) makhtūminsealed يُسْقَوْنَ مِنْ رَحِيقٍ مَخْتُومٍ
