Quran Dictionary - خ ط ف

The triliteral root khā ṭā fā (خ ط ف) occurs seven times in the Quran, in three derived forms:

  • three times as the form I verb khaṭifa (خَطِفَ)
  • three times as the form V verb yatakhaṭṭafa (يَتَخَطَّفَ)
  • once as the noun khaṭfat (خَطْفَة)

Verb (form I) - to snatch

(2:20:3) yakhṭafusnatches away يَكَادُ الْبَرْقُ يَخْطَفُ أَبْصَارَهُمْ كُلَّمَا أَضَاءَ لَهُمْ مَشَوْا فِيهِ
(22:31:13) fatakhṭafuhuand (had) snatched him فَكَأَنَّمَا خَرَّ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ فَتَخْطَفُهُ الطَّيْرُ
(37:10:3) khaṭifasnatches إِلَّا مَنْ خَطِفَ الْخَطْفَةَ فَأَتْبَعَهُ شِهَابٌ ثَاقِبٌ

Verb (form V) - to do away with, to sweep, to take away

(8:26:10) yatakhaṭṭafakumumight do away with you تَخَافُونَ أَنْ يَتَخَطَّفَكُمُ النَّاسُ فَآوَاكُمْ وَأَيَّدَكُمْ بِنَصْرِهِ
(28:57:6) nutakhaṭṭafwe would be swept وَقَالُوا إِنْ نَتَّبِعِ الْهُدَىٰ مَعَكَ نُتَخَطَّفْ مِنْ أَرْضِنَا
(29:67:7) wayutakhaṭṭafuwhile are being taken away أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا أَنَّا جَعَلْنَا حَرَمًا آمِنًا وَيُتَخَطَّفُ النَّاسُ مِنْ حَوْلِهِمْ
