The triliteral root sīn wāw dāl (س و د) occurs 10 times in the Quran, in six derived forms:

  • twice as the form IX verb is'waddat (ٱسْوَدَّتْ)
  • once as the adjective aswad (أَسْوَد)
  • once as the adjective sūd (سُود)
  • three times as the noun sayyid (سَيِّد)
  • once as the adjective mus'waddat (مُّسْوَدَّة)
  • twice as the form IX active participle mus'wadd (مُسْوَدّ)

Verb (form IX) - to become black

(3:106:4) wataswadduand would become black يَوْمَ تَبْيَضُّ وُجُوهٌ وَتَسْوَدُّ وُجُوهٌ
(3:106:8) is'waddatturn black فَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ اسْوَدَّتْ وُجُوهُهُمْ أَكَفَرْتُمْ بَعْدَ إِيمَانِكُمْ

Adjective

(2:187:40) l-aswadi[the] black وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا حَتَّىٰ يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمُ الْخَيْطُ الْأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الْخَيْطِ الْأَسْوَدِ مِنَ الْفَجْرِ
