Quran Dictionary - س ق ط

The triliteral root sīn qāf ṭā (س ق ط) occurs eight times in the Quran, in four derived forms:

  • three times as the form I verb suqiṭa (سُقِطَ)
  • once as the form III verb tusāqiṭ (تُسَٰقِطْ)
  • three times as the form IV verb tus'qiṭa (تُسْقِطَ)
  • once as the active participle sāqiṭ (سَاقِط)

Verb (form I) - to fall, to regret

(6:59:14) tasquṭufalls وَمَا تَسْقُطُ مِنْ وَرَقَةٍ إِلَّا يَعْلَمُهَا
(7:149:2) suqiṭa(it was made to) fall وَلَمَّا سُقِطَ فِي أَيْدِيهِمْ وَرَأَوْا أَنَّهُمْ قَدْ ضَلُّوا قَالُوا لَئِنْ لَمْ يَرْحَمْنَا رَبُّنَا وَيَغْفِرْ لَنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ
(9:49:11) saqaṭūthey have fallen وَمِنْهُمْ مَنْ يَقُولُ ائْذَنْ لِي وَلَا تَفْتِنِّي أَلَا فِي الْفِتْنَةِ سَقَطُوا

Verb (form III) - to drop

(19:25:5) tusāqiṭit will drop وَهُزِّي إِلَيْكِ بِجِذْعِ النَّخْلَةِ تُسَاقِطْ عَلَيْكِ رُطَبًا جَنِيًّا

Verb (form IV) - to cause toll, to cause to fall

(17:92:2) tus'qiṭayou cause to fall أَوْ تُسْقِطَ السَّمَاءَ كَمَا زَعَمْتَ عَلَيْنَا كِسَفًا
(26:187:1) fa-asqiṭThen cause to fall فَأَسْقِطْ عَلَيْنَا كِسَفًا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ إِنْ كُنْتَ مِنَ الصَّادِقِينَ
(34:9:18) nus'qiṭcause to fall إِنْ نَشَأْ نَخْسِفْ بِهِمُ الْأَرْضَ أَوْ نُسْقِطْ عَلَيْهِمْ كِسَفًا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ

Active participle

(52:44:6) sāqiṭanfalling وَإِنْ يَرَوْا كِسْفًا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ سَاقِطًا يَقُولُوا سَحَابٌ مَرْكُومٌ
