Quran Dictionary - ر د ي

The triliteral root rā dāl yā (ر د ي) occurs six times in the Quran, in four derived forms:

  • once as the form I verb tardā (تَرْدَىٰ)
  • three times as the form IV verb ardā (أَرْدَىٰ)
  • once as the form V verb taraddā (تَرَدَّىٰٓ)
  • once as the form V active participle mutaraddiyat (مُتَرَدِّيَة)

Verb (form I) - to perish

(20:16:10) fatardālest you perish فَلَا يَصُدَّنَّكَ عَنْهَا مَنْ لَا يُؤْمِنُ بِهَا وَاتَّبَعَ هَوَاهُ فَتَرْدَىٰ

Verb (form IV) - to ruin

(6:137:9) liyur'dūhumso that they may ruin them وَكَذَٰلِكَ زَيَّنَ لِكَثِيرٍ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ قَتْلَ أَوْلَادِهِمْ شُرَكَاؤُهُمْ لِيُرْدُوهُمْ
(37:56:5) latur'dīniruined me قَالَ تَاللَّهِ إِنْ كِدْتَ لَتُرْدِينِ
(41:23:6) ardākumIt has ruined you وَذَٰلِكُمْ ظَنُّكُمُ الَّذِي ظَنَنْتُمْ بِرَبِّكُمْ أَرْدَاكُمْ

Verb (form V) - to fall

(92:11:6) taraddāhe falls وَمَا يُغْنِي عَنْهُ مَالُهُ إِذَا تَرَدَّىٰ

Active participle (form V)

(5:3:14) wal-mutaradiyatuand that which has a fatal fall وَالْمَوْقُوذَةُ وَالْمُتَرَدِّيَةُ وَالنَّطِيحَةُ وَمَا أَكَلَ السَّبُعُ
