The triliteral root rā bā wāw (ر ب و) occurs 20 times in the Quran, in eight derived forms:

  • four times as the form I verb rabat (رَبَتْ)
  • twice as the form II verb rabbaya (رَبَّيَ)
  • twice as the form IV verb arbā (أَرْبَىٰ)
  • once as the noun rib (رِّب)
  • seven times as the noun riba (رِّبَوٰا)
  • twice as the noun rabwat (رَبْوَة)
  • once as the active participle rābī (رَّابِي)
  • once as the active participle rābiyat (رَّابِيَة)

Verb (form I) - to increase, to swell

(22:5:64) warabatand it swells وَتَرَى الْأَرْضَ هَامِدَةً فَإِذَا أَنْزَلْنَا عَلَيْهَا الْمَاءَ اهْتَزَّتْ وَرَبَتْ
(30:39:5) liyarbuwāto increase وَمَا آتَيْتُمْ مِنْ رِبًا لِيَرْبُوَ فِي أَمْوَالِ النَّاسِ
(30:39:10) yarbū(will) increase فَلَا يَرْبُو عِنْدَ اللَّهِ
(41:39:12) warabatand grows وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ أَنَّكَ تَرَى الْأَرْضَ خَاشِعَةً فَإِذَا أَنْزَلْنَا عَلَيْهَا الْمَاءَ اهْتَزَّتْ وَرَبَتْ

Verb (form II) - to bring up

(17:24:11) rabbayānīthey brought me up وَقُلْ رَبِّ ارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًا
(26:18:3) nurabbikawe bring you up قَالَ أَلَمْ نُرَبِّكَ فِينَا وَلِيدًا وَلَبِثْتَ فِينَا مِنْ عُمُرِكَ سِنِينَ

Verb (form IV) - to increase, to make numerous

(2:276:4) wayur'bīand (gives) increase يَمْحَقُ اللَّهُ الرِّبَا وَيُرْبِي الصَّدَقَاتِ
(16:92:18) arbāmore numerous تَتَّخِذُونَ أَيْمَانَكُمْ دَخَلًا بَيْنَكُمْ أَنْ تَكُونَ أُمَّةٌ هِيَ أَرْبَىٰ مِنْ أُمَّةٍ
