Quran Dictionary - ر ب ط

The triliteral root rā bā ṭā (ر ب ط) occurs five times in the Quran, in three derived forms:

  • three times as the form I verb rabaṭ (رَّبَطْ)
  • once as the form III verb rābiṭu (رَابِطُ)
  • once as the noun ribāṭ (رِّبَاط)

Verb (form I) - to strengthen, to make firm

(8:11:17) waliyarbiṭaAnd to strengthen وَلِيَرْبِطَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِكُمْ وَيُثَبِّتَ بِهِ الْأَقْدَامَ
(18:14:1) warabaṭnāAnd We made firm وَرَبَطْنَا عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ إِذْ قَامُوا فَقَالُوا رَبُّنَا رَبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ
(28:10:12) rabaṭnāWe strengthened إِنْ كَادَتْ لَتُبْدِي بِهِ لَوْلَا أَنْ رَبَطْنَا عَلَىٰ قَلْبِهَا لِتَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ

Verb (form III) - to be constant

(3:200:6) warābiṭūand [be] constant يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اصْبِرُوا وَصَابِرُوا وَرَابِطُوا

(8:60:8) ribāṭitethered وَأَعِدُّوا لَهُمْ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ مِنْ قُوَّةٍ وَمِنْ رِبَاطِ الْخَيْلِ
