The triliteral root rā ḍād ʿayn (ر ض ع) occurs 11 times in the Quran, in six derived forms:

  • once as the form I verb yur'ḍiʿ (يُرْضِعْ)
  • five times as the form IV verb arḍaʿat (أَرْضَعَتْ)
  • once as the form X verb tastarḍiʿu (تَسْتَرْضِعُ)
  • twice as the noun raḍāʿat (رَّضَاعَة)
  • once as the noun marāḍiʿ (مَرَاضِع)
  • once as the form IV active participle mur'ḍiʿat (مُرْضِعَة)

Verb (form I) - to suckle

(2:233:2) yur'ḍiʿ'nashall suckle وَالْوَالِدَاتُ يُرْضِعْنَ أَوْلَادَهُنَّ حَوْلَيْنِ كَامِلَيْنِ

Verb (form IV) - to nurse, to suckle

(4:23:14) arḍaʿnakumnursed you وَأُمَّهَاتُكُمُ اللَّاتِي أَرْضَعْنَكُمْ وَأَخَوَاتُكُمْ مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ
