The triliteral root qāf sīn wāw (ق س و) occurs seven times in the Quran, in three derived forms:

  • three times as the form I verb qasat (قَسَتْ)
  • once as the noun qaswat (قَسْوَة)
  • three times as the active participle qāsiyat (قَٰسِيَة)

Verb (form I) - to harden

(2:74:2) qasathardened ثُمَّ قَسَتْ قُلُوبُكُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ فَهِيَ كَالْحِجَارَةِ أَوْ أَشَدُّ قَسْوَةً
(6:43:7) qasatbecame hardened قَسَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَزَيَّنَ لَهُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ مَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ
(57:16:24) faqasatso hardened فَطَالَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْأَمَدُ فَقَسَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ
