The triliteral root lām mīm sīn (ل م س) occurs five times in the Quran, in two derived forms:

  • four times as the form I verb lamasu (لَمَسُ)
  • once as the form VIII verb al'tamisu (ٱلْتَمِسُ)

Verb (form I) - to touch, to have contact

(4:43:33) lāmastumuyou have touched أَوْ لَامَسْتُمُ النِّسَاءَ فَلَمْ تَجِدُوا مَاءً فَتَيَمَّمُوا صَعِيدًا
(5:6:35) lāmastumuhas (had) contact أَوْ لَامَسْتُمُ النِّسَاءَ فَلَمْ تَجِدُوا مَاءً فَتَيَمَّمُوا صَعِيدًا
(6:7:7) falamasūhuand they touched it وَلَوْ نَزَّلْنَا عَلَيْكَ كِتَابًا فِي قِرْطَاسٍ فَلَمَسُوهُ بِأَيْدِيهِمْ لَقَالَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا سِحْرٌ مُبِينٌ
(72:8:2) lamasnāsought to touch وَأَنَّا لَمَسْنَا السَّمَاءَ فَوَجَدْنَاهَا مُلِئَتْ حَرَسًا شَدِيدًا وَشُهُبًا

Verb (form VIII) - to seek

(57:13:14) fal-tamisūand seek قِيلَ ارْجِعُوا وَرَاءَكُمْ فَالْتَمِسُوا نُورًا
