Quran Dictionary - ج ل و

The triliteral root jīm lām wāw (ج ل و) occurs five times in the Quran, in three derived forms:

  • twice as the form I verb tajallā (تَجَلَّىٰ)
  • twice as the form II verb jallā (جَلَّىٰ)
  • once as the noun jalā (جَلَآء)

Verb (form I) - to reveal

(7:143:25) tajallārevealed (His) Glory فَلَمَّا تَجَلَّىٰ رَبُّهُ لِلْجَبَلِ جَعَلَهُ دَكًّا وَخَرَّ مُوسَىٰ صَعِقًا
(92:2:3) tajallāit shines in brightness وَالنَّهَارِ إِذَا تَجَلَّىٰ

Verb (form II) - to reveal

(7:187:12) yujallīhācan reveal [it] قُلْ إِنَّمَا عِلْمُهَا عِنْدَ رَبِّي لَا يُجَلِّيهَا لِوَقْتِهَا إِلَّا هُوَ
(91:3:3) jallāhāit displays it وَالنَّهَارِ إِذَا جَلَّاهَا

(59:3:6) l-jalāathe exile وَلَوْلَا أَنْ كَتَبَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْجَلَاءَ لَعَذَّبَهُمْ فِي الدُّنْيَا
