The triliteral root ghayn wāw yā (غ و ي) occurs 22 times in the Quran, in five derived forms:

  • three times as the form I verb ghawā (غَوَىٰ)
  • eight times as the form IV verb aghway (أَغْوَيْ)
  • once as the noun ghawiīī (غَوِىّ)
  • four times as the noun ghayy (غَيّ)
  • six times as the active participle ghāwīn (غَٰوِين)

Verb (form I) - to err, to go astray

(20:121:15) faghawāand erred وَعَصَىٰ آدَمُ رَبَّهُ فَغَوَىٰ
(28:63:12) ghawaynāwe were astray رَبَّنَا هَٰؤُلَاءِ الَّذِينَ أَغْوَيْنَا أَغْوَيْنَاهُمْ كَمَا غَوَيْنَا
(53:2:5) ghawāhas he erred مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمْ وَمَا غَوَىٰ

Verb (form IV) - to mislead, to lead astray

(7:16:3) aghwaytanīYou have sent me astray قَالَ فَبِمَا أَغْوَيْتَنِي لَأَقْعُدَنَّ لَهُمْ صِرَاطَكَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ
(11:34:14) yugh'wiyakumlet you go astray وَلَا يَنْفَعُكُمْ نُصْحِي إِنْ أَرَدْتُ أَنْ أَنْصَحَ لَكُمْ إِنْ كَانَ اللَّهُ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يُغْوِيَكُمْ
(15:39:4) aghwaytanīYou misled me قَالَ رَبِّ بِمَا أَغْوَيْتَنِي لَأُزَيِّنَنَّ لَهُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ
(15:39:9) wala-ugh'wiyannahumand I will mislead them لَأُزَيِّنَنَّ لَهُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَأُغْوِيَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
(28:63:9) aghwaynāwe led astray رَبَّنَا هَٰؤُلَاءِ الَّذِينَ أَغْوَيْنَا أَغْوَيْنَاهُمْ كَمَا غَوَيْنَا
(28:63:10) aghwaynāhumWe led them astray رَبَّنَا هَٰؤُلَاءِ الَّذِينَ أَغْوَيْنَا أَغْوَيْنَاهُمْ كَمَا غَوَيْنَا
(37:32:1) fa-aghwaynākumSo we led you astray فَأَغْوَيْنَاكُمْ إِنَّا كُنَّا غَاوِينَ
(38:82:3) la-ugh'wiyannahumI will surely mislead them قَالَ فَبِعِزَّتِكَ لَأُغْوِيَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
