The triliteral root dāl fā ʿayn (د ف ع) occurs 10 times in the Quran, in four derived forms:

  • five times as the form I verb dafaʿ (دَفَعْ)
  • once as the form III verb yudāfiʿu (يُدَٰفِعُ)
  • twice as the verbal noun dafʿ (دَفْع)
  • twice as the active participle dāfiʿ (دَافِع)

Verb (form I) - to defend, to deliver, to repel

(3:167:12) id'faʿūdefend وَقِيلَ لَهُمْ تَعَالَوْا قَاتِلُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ أَوِ ادْفَعُوا
(4:6:11) fa-id'faʿūthen deliver فَإِنْ آنَسْتُمْ مِنْهُمْ رُشْدًا فَادْفَعُوا إِلَيْهِمْ أَمْوَالَهُمْ
(4:6:30) dafaʿtumyou deliver فَإِذَا دَفَعْتُمْ إِلَيْهِمْ أَمْوَالَهُمْ فَأَشْهِدُوا عَلَيْهِمْ وَكَفَىٰ بِاللَّهِ حَسِيبًا
(23:96:1) id'faʿRepel ادْفَعْ بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ السَّيِّئَةَ نَحْنُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يَصِفُونَ
(41:34:6) id'faʿRepel ادْفَعْ بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ فَإِذَا الَّذِي بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَهُ عَدَاوَةٌ كَأَنَّهُ وَلِيٌّ حَمِيمٌ

Verb (form III) - to defend

(22:38:3) yudāfiʿudefends إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُدَافِعُ عَنِ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا

(2:251:15) dafʿu(for the) repelling وَلَوْلَا دَفْعُ اللَّهِ النَّاسَ بَعْضَهُمْ بِبَعْضٍ لَفَسَدَتِ الْأَرْضُ
(22:40:13) dafʿuAllah checks وَلَوْلَا دَفْعُ اللَّهِ النَّاسَ بَعْضَهُمْ بِبَعْضٍ لَهُدِّمَتْ صَوَامِعُ وَبِيَعٌ

Active participle

(52:8:4) dāfiʿinpreventer مَا لَهُ مِنْ دَافِعٍ
(70:2:4) dāfiʿunany preventer لِلْكَافِرِينَ لَيْسَ لَهُ دَافِعٌ
