The triliteral root ṭā yā rā (ط ي ر) occurs 29 times in the Quran, in five derived forms:

  • once as the form I verb yaṭīru (يَطِيرُ)
  • three times as the form V verb iṭṭayyar (ٱطَّيَّرْ)
  • 19 times as the noun ṭayr (طَيْر)
  • five times as the active participle ṭāir (طَآئِر)
  • once as the form X active participle mus'taṭīr (مُسْتَطِير)

Verb (form I) - to fly

(6:38:8) yaṭīru(that) flies وَمَا مِنْ دَابَّةٍ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا طَائِرٍ يَطِيرُ بِجَنَاحَيْهِ إِلَّا أُمَمٌ أَمْثَالُكُمْ

Verb (form V) - to ascribe an evil omen

(7:131:10) yaṭṭayyarūthey ascribe evil omens وَإِنْ تُصِبْهُمْ سَيِّئَةٌ يَطَّيَّرُوا بِمُوسَىٰ وَمَنْ مَعَهُ
