The triliteral root ḥā yā ḍād (ح ي ض) occurs four times in the Quran, in two derived forms:

  • once as the form I verb yaḥiḍ (يَحِضْ)
  • three times as the passive participle maḥīḍ (مَحِيض)

Verb (form I) - to menstruate

(65:4:14) yaḥiḍ'na[they] menstruated وَاللَّائِي يَئِسْنَ مِنَ الْمَحِيضِ مِنْ نِسَائِكُمْ إِنِ ارْتَبْتُمْ فَعِدَّتُهُنَّ ثَلَاثَةُ أَشْهُرٍ وَاللَّائِي لَمْ يَحِضْنَ

Passive participle

(2:222:3) l-maḥīḍi[the] menstruation وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْمَحِيضِ
(2:222:10) l-maḥīḍi(their) [the] menstruation قُلْ هُوَ أَذًى فَاعْتَزِلُوا النِّسَاءَ فِي الْمَحِيضِ
(65:4:4) l-maḥīḍithe menstruation وَاللَّائِي يَئِسْنَ مِنَ الْمَحِيضِ مِنْ نِسَائِكُمْ إِنِ ارْتَبْتُمْ فَعِدَّتُهُنَّ ثَلَاثَةُ أَشْهُرٍ
