The triliteral root ḥā mīm yā (ح م ي) occurs six times in the Quran, in four derived forms:

  • once as the form I verb yuḥ'mā (يُحْمَىٰ)
  • once as the noun ḥām (حَام)
  • twice as the noun ḥamiyyat (حَمِيَّة)
  • twice as the active participle ḥāmiyat (حَامِيَة)

Verb (form I) - to heat

(9:35:2) yuḥ'māit will be heated [on it] يَوْمَ يُحْمَىٰ عَلَيْهَا فِي نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ فَتُكْوَىٰ بِهَا جِبَاهُهُمْ

Noun

(5:103:11) ḥāmina Hami مَا جَعَلَ اللَّهُ مِنْ بَحِيرَةٍ وَلَا سَائِبَةٍ وَلَا وَصِيلَةٍ وَلَا حَامٍ

Noun

(48:26:7) l-ḥamiyatadisdain إِذْ جَعَلَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا فِي قُلُوبِهِمُ الْحَمِيَّةَ
(48:26:8) ḥamiyyata(the) disdain حَمِيَّةَ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ سَكِينَتَهُ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِهِ

Active participle

(88:4:3) ḥāmiyatanintensely hot تَصْلَىٰ نَارًا حَامِيَةً
(101:11:2) ḥāmiyatunintensely hot نَارٌ حَامِيَةٌ
