The triliteral root ʿayn zāy mīm (ع ز م) occurs nine times in the Quran, in two derived forms:

  • four times as the form I verb ʿazama (عَزَمَ)
  • five times as the noun ʿazm (عَزْم)

Verb (form I) - to resolve, to decide, to determine

(2:227:2) ʿazamūthey resolve وَإِنْ عَزَمُوا الطَّلَاقَ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ
(2:235:28) taʿzimūresolve (on) وَلَا تَعْزِمُوا عُقْدَةَ النِّكَاحِ حَتَّىٰ يَبْلُغَ الْكِتَابُ أَجَلَهُ
(3:159:23) ʿazamtayou have decided فَإِذَا عَزَمْتَ فَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُتَوَكِّلِينَ
(47:21:5) ʿazama(is) determined فَإِذَا عَزَمَ الْأَمْرُ فَلَوْ صَدَقُوا اللَّهَ لَكَانَ خَيْرًا لَهُمْ
