Quran Dictionary - أ ل ف

The triliteral root hamza lām fā (أ ل ف) occurs 22 times in the Quran, in four derived forms:

  • five times as the form II verb allafa (أَلَّفَ)
  • 14 times as the noun alf (أَلْف)
  • once as the form II passive participle mu-allafat (مُؤَلَّفَة)
  • twice as the form IV verbal noun ilāf (إِلَٰف)

Verb (form II) - to join, to reconcile

(3:103:14) fa-allafathen He made friendship إِذْ كُنْتُمْ أَعْدَاءً فَأَلَّفَ بَيْنَ قُلُوبِكُمْ فَأَصْبَحْتُمْ بِنِعْمَتِهِ إِخْوَانًا
(8:63:1) wa-allafaAnd He (has) put affection وَأَلَّفَ بَيْنَ قُلُوبِهِمْ لَوْ أَنْفَقْتَ مَا فِي الْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا مَا أَلَّفْتَ
(8:63:11) allafta(could) you (have) put affection مَا أَلَّفْتَ بَيْنَ قُلُوبِهِمْ وَلَٰكِنَّ اللَّهَ أَلَّفَ بَيْنَهُمْ
(8:63:16) allafa(has) put affection بَيْنَ قُلُوبِهِمْ وَلَٰكِنَّ اللَّهَ أَلَّفَ بَيْنَهُمْ
(24:43:8) yu-allifujoins أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّ اللَّهَ يُزْجِي سَحَابًا ثُمَّ يُؤَلِّفُ بَيْنَهُ

Noun - thousand

(2:96:13) alfa(of) a thousand وَمِنَ الَّذِينَ أَشْرَكُوا يَوَدُّ أَحَدُهُمْ لَوْ يُعَمَّرُ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ

(37:147:4) alfinthousand وَأَرْسَلْنَاهُ إِلَىٰ مِائَةِ أَلْفٍ أَوْ يَزِيدُونَ

Passive participle (form II) - one who is inclined

(9:60:7) wal-mu-alafatiand the ones inclined لِلْفُقَرَاءِ وَالْمَسَاكِينِ وَالْعَامِلِينَ عَلَيْهَا وَالْمُؤَلَّفَةِ قُلُوبُهُمْ
