The triliteral root hamza fā lām (أ ف ل) occurs four times in the Quran, in two derived forms:

  • three times as the form I verb afala (أَفَلَ)
  • once as the active participle āfilīn (ءَافِلِين)

Verb (form I) - to set

(6:76:11) afalait set قَالَ هَٰذَا رَبِّي فَلَمَّا أَفَلَ قَالَ لَا أُحِبُّ الْآفِلِينَ
(6:77:9) afalait set فَلَمَّا أَفَلَ قَالَ لَئِنْ لَمْ يَهْدِنِي رَبِّي لَأَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ
(6:78:11) afalatit set فَلَمَّا أَفَلَتْ قَالَ يَا قَوْمِ إِنِّي بَرِيءٌ مِمَّا تُشْرِكُونَ
