The triliteral root dhāl mīm mīm (ذ م م) occurs five times in the Quran, in two derived forms:

  • twice as the noun dhimmat (ذِمَّة)
  • three times as the passive participle madhmūm (مَذْمُوم)

(9:8:10) dhimmatancovenant of protection كَيْفَ وَإِنْ يَظْهَرُوا عَلَيْكُمْ لَا يَرْقُبُوا فِيكُمْ إِلًّا وَلَا ذِمَّةً
(9:10:7) dhimmatancovenant of protection لَا يَرْقُبُونَ فِي مُؤْمِنٍ إِلًّا وَلَا ذِمَّةً وَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُعْتَدُونَ

Passive participle

(17:18:17) madhmūmandisgraced ثُمَّ جَعَلْنَا لَهُ جَهَنَّمَ يَصْلَاهَا مَذْمُومًا مَدْحُورًا
(17:22:8) madhmūmandisgraced لَا تَجْعَلْ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَٰهًا آخَرَ فَتَقْعُدَ مَذْمُومًا مَخْذُولًا
(68:49:10) madhmūmun(was) blamed لَوْلَا أَنْ تَدَارَكَهُ نِعْمَةٌ مِنْ رَبِّهِ لَنُبِذَ بِالْعَرَاءِ وَهُوَ مَذْمُومٌ
