The triliteral root shīn mīm lām (ش م ل) occurs 12 times in the Quran, in three derived forms:

  • twice as the form VIII verb ish'tamalat (ٱشْتَمَلَتْ)
  • twice as the noun shamāil (شَمَآئِل)
  • eight times as the noun shimāl (شِّمَال)
