The triliteral root shīn qāf wāw (ش ق و) occurs 12 times in the Quran, in four derived forms:

  • four times as the form I verb shaqu (شَقُ)
  • three times as the noun ashqā (أَشْقَى)
  • once as the noun shiq'wat (شِقْوَت)
  • four times as the nominal shaqiyy (شَقِيّ)

Verb (form I) - to suffer, to be wretched, to be distressed

(11:106:3) shaqūwere wretched فَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ شَقُوا فَفِي النَّارِ لَهُمْ فِيهَا زَفِيرٌ وَشَهِيقٌ
(20:2:5) litashqāthat you be distressed مَا أَنْزَلْنَا عَلَيْكَ الْقُرْآنَ لِتَشْقَىٰ
(20:117:12) fatashqāso (that) you would suffer إِنَّ هَٰذَا عَدُوٌّ لَكَ وَلِزَوْجِكَ فَلَا يُخْرِجَنَّكُمَا مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ فَتَشْقَىٰ
(20:123:18) yashqāsuffer فَإِمَّا يَأْتِيَنَّكُمْ مِنِّي هُدًى فَمَنِ اتَّبَعَ هُدَايَ فَلَا يَضِلُّ وَلَا يَشْقَىٰ
